We have the great fortune of having more than 144 certified farmers markets in Los Angeles and over 800 in California. From fresh, organic fruits and vegetables to artisan foods and handmade crafts, there’s no limit to the treasures you can find. Every market has its own flavor--no pun intended. Here are the five most popular ones in LA. Check them out!
Beverly Hills Farmers Market
Open every Sunday from 9 am to 1 pm at the 9300 block of Civic Center Drive, this market is a can’t-miss. The calendar of events includes an annual pie baking contest--or Piesta--each June, a PickleFest in August, children’s cooking classes, and a kid zone. With more than 60 local farmers participating each week, you are bound to find fresh, local produce and specialty prepared foods such as soups, tamales, and other gourmet goodies.
Hollywood Farmers Market
The largest farmers market in LA is open every Sunday from 8 am to 1 pm, with more than 160 farmers, producers, and vendors offering produce grown from all over the state. They boast 12,000 visitors each day and have been around for more than 30 years. This mainstay provides the largest selection of organic fruits, vegetables, and produce in the area.
Mar Vista Farmers Market
Located at Grand View and Venice Boulevard, this farmers market is over 12 years old and getting better every day. Only open on Sundays from 9 am to 2 pm, this market is always bustling with locals and visitors. Though dogs are not permitted around the booths, there is dog-sitting on the premises along with a bike valet and repair, a DJ, and kids activities every week.
Santa Monica Farmers Market
A favorite of local chefs, you can choose from fresh produce, herbs, lettuces, dried beans, and even emu eggs at the Santa Monica Farmers Market. According to Saveur, many chefs consider this farmers market the “heart of LA’s restaurant pulse.” Wednesday mornings are the biggest day at the market, having 75 farmers in attendance.
Studio City Farmers Market
The Studio City Farmers Market is open on Sundays from 8 am to 2 pm. Located on Ventura Place between Laurel Canyon and Radford Avenue, this market is open rain or shine. This market was started to bring fresh produce to its citizens but has grown into more than just a place to shop. It is now a community gathering place to spend time with friends and families--its motto is even “Making a Difference in Our Community.” With this market, you can go for breakfast and leave with food for lunch and dinner.
